The Difference Between Engagement Rings and Wedding Rings

- An engagement ring is the symbol of a commitment to marriage. It is usually given during the proposal when a man asks a woman to marry him.
- Engagement rings have usually a solitaire diamond, though there are several variations (choice and number of stones, color, etc) depending upon taste
- Engagement rings are often more decorated and more expensive than wedding rings.
- An engagement ring can have three stones with the largest stone in the center. An anniversary ring usually has three stones of the same size.
- Wedding rings can be plain or can be decorated with small stones like for example evenly sized diamonds. The final decision is a personal choice.
- The wedding ring / band is the symbol of the marriage. It is given during the wedding ceremony when the couple exchanges vows.
- Some people choose the same type of metal and a similar design for the engagement ring and the wedding ring / band. There are bridal sets that include an engagement ring that complement or match in color and design the wedding ring. Also, there are wedding ring sets for the couple (bride and groom).
- The engagement and wedding rings are usually worn on the ring finger of the left hand.
- Most used metals: gold, silver, platinum, titanium.
- Most common stones: diamond, cubic zirconia, sapphire, pearl, ruby, topaz, tanzanite, topaz, emerald and others.

  1. Nice information. But, I feel that in the end it all depends on personal choice and preferences. I went for a plain engagement ring, and my wedding rung was bling with a big ruby and small diamond surrounding it, where as my anniversary ring has mine and my husbands initials.
